Bruins Pull Off 2 Trades, Including Blockbuster
Huberdeau shipped to Tampa for Matheson, 1s Rd Pick, and Prospect
BOSTON, MA --------- Bruins GM Dan Lifshatz took a lot of heat this. No it wasn't for his pompous attitude, or his manly attitude when it comes to crying, no, GM Lifshatz took heat for what was considered a "Kirk Job," by many inside the league when he dealt 23-year old wing, Jonathan Huberdeau to the Tampa Bay Lightning. In return, the Bruins acquired what was considered by many to be "insanely large" return, adding young defenseman Michael Matheson, Tampa's 2017 1st Round Pick, and Canadian prospect Mitchell Stephens.
Despite the cries of multiple GM's around the league, Lifshatz has maintained he got fairer value than what other GM's believe. "Over the course of the past few days, I've been told Jonathan, whose 23 and is basically a 60 point player is, overrated, a passenger surrounded by talent which props him up, and will never be the same after his achillies injury. I laugh at that sentiment. Sometimes, people will cry and b**** because they wanted the deal for themselves. Its nothing but unprofessional behavior."
Lifshatz, however moved past the negativity, and thank Huberdeau for his service. " I wish Jonathan nothing but the best. I hope he becomes all that we think he can be and he is welcome back in Boston anytime." Huberdeau had just signed a 5-year, $18.28 million dollar deal last off-season with the Bruins and was surprised to be moved.
"I had heard my name in trade rumors earlier in the season, but I thiught we were past that. I want to thank GM Lifshatz for everything he has done. I enjoyed my time in Boston, but cannot wait to be apart of the Tampa Bay Lightning. As for everything that was said this week, it only motivates me to do better, and better myself in the process."
Luckily for Lifshatz, he wasn't done with his "Kirking" for the day, as the Bruins sent 22-year old goalie Jonas Korpisalo to the Pittsburgh Penguins for 2018 3rd and 5th round picks, as well as minor league Luke Witkowski.
"We're sad to see Jonas go, but he understood when he arrived that he was likely to be moved again. He thanked us but was eager to join a playoff contender, and we think he will join a great team in Pittsburgh." The Penguins have struggled mightily with their goaltending this year, ranking 20th in goals allowed with 106 goals allowed in just 38 games, and needed to add some quality to help right the ship.
Despite these two decent sized deals its rumored that Lifshatz is not done dealing. Rumors continue to swirl that left winger Brad Marchand could be on the move before the trade deadline is through. There have also been murmors about both defenseman Connor Murphy and goalie Calvin Pickard, but nothing concrete as of now. Better gear up because one thing is for sure, this deadline is set to be an interesting not just for the Bruins, but the entire Eastern Conference.
