Sabres WJC Prospect Report

A look at the Sabres prospects at the WJC

The Sabres sent 4 prospects to this years WJC in Montreal/Toronto, 2 Canadians, 1 American & 1 Czech player. We will rate their performances starting at number 4:

#4 Jack Roslovic 6'1" 192 lbs - Team USA (Manitoba Moose) - 7GP 0G 2A 2P 4PIM +1

Although Roslovic's team won the tournament he was used in a bottom 6 role and was not put in a position to succeed in an offensive role. He did show some decent chemistry with fellow Jets pick Erik Foley and created some good offensive chances sporadically through the tourny. One impressive thing that stands out is he still leads the AHL's Moose in scoring despite missing games.

NHL Projection - 2nd/3rd line two-way C/RW - NHL Comparable: Jason Zucker (more of a passer though)

#3 Blake Speers C/RW 6'0" 185 lbs - Team Canada (Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds) - 7GP 1G 2A 3P 2PIM +1

Speers was moved around the line-up often seeing time on all the top 3 lines. He's an agressive forechecker and isn't afraid to go into the dirty areas despite looking small on the ice even though he's not small by any means. He showed a great cycle game and did manage to pick up some points along the way. Blake does possess a good shot but didn't show that off during the tourny, could be still figuring it out after a broken wrist sidelined him since his return to the OHL from NJ.

NHL Projection - Middle 6 two-way RW - NHL Comparable: Mix of Adam Henrique and Kyle Palmieri

#2 Filip Chlapik C 6'1" 196 lbs - Team Czech Republic (Charlottetown Islanders) - 5GP 2G 1A 3P 0PIM -2

He was one of the better looking forwards on a fairly weak Czech team that was lead from the back end. He was good at creating offence for his linemates but it seems everyone was a bit snake bitten on the team. He looked weak playing the cycle game and a bit lost without the puck but when he did have the puck he was their best player. Consistancy issues have followed Chlapik around it seems.

NHL Projection - 2nd line playmaking C - NHL Comparable: David Krejci

#1 Thomas Chabot D 6'2" 190 lbs - Team Canada (Saint John Sea Dogs) - 7GP 4G 6A 10P 8PIM +4

To me he was the best player at the entire tournament and really stood out when his partner Philippe Myers went down with an injury. Poise was the name of his game, he never panicked with the puck and looked incredibly smooth out there. Even when he didn't have the puck he made some great plays in his own end, the most memorable was swating the puck away from huge Jordan Greenway in OT in the gold medal game. If his stock wasn't already high, this tounry did nothing but improve that.

NHL Projection - 1st pairing two-way Dman - NHL Comparable: Jay Bouwmeester
