Lightning's Day 1 Draft Review

4 players selected, with another 4 to go on Day 2

LW. Maxime Comtois - Rd 2 / 39 OV

Comtois is a guy who's been up and down on everyone's draft boards the past 2 seasons. His 51 point showing in 64 games was not impressive during his draft year. He picked it up in a big way this season scoring 85 points in 54 games, and earning a spot on Team Canada for the World Juniors. His WJC performance opened even more eyes as Comtois was relied upon to show some spark in the lineup. He finished the World Juniors with 6 points in 7 games. Some mock drafts had Comtois going in Round 1.

C. Jaret Anderson-Dolan - Rd 2 / 49 OV

What intrigued me about Anderson-Dolan was the fact he was one of the youngest players in the draft yet seemed very mature on the ice. He is your typical smart player. High IQ, great leadership and a solid two-way game. He is not going to light it up offensively, but will be a respectable two-way player at the NHL level. He will be given opportunities in LA where the prospect depth is not very deep at the moment.

LW. Alexandre Texier - Rd 2 / 52 OV

The Lightning had to move up to make this pick, which perhaps left some people scratching their heads. But don't let this frenchmen fool you as he was a 45th overall pick in the NHL draft. Texier has done nothing to drop in this draft. In fact, he looked great in international play this season. He put up respectable numbers in Finlands top league. For an 18 year old, he posted 22 points in 53 games playing against adults. He will return to KalPa next season in hopes to get more ice time. Texier has wheels and is one of the best skaters in the draft. A work in progress.

RW. Ostap Safin - Rd 3 / 92 OV

If the Lightning's first two picks of the draft tell you anything, they went with safe bets to be NHL regulars. Their next two picks trended in a different direction. Both Texier and Safin are more your boom or bust type of players. Safin has great speed for a big man and extrodinary hands. He will return to the Q next year where he hopes increase on his offensive numbers. His short stint in the AHL was forgettable, but he is the type of player who can really dominate a game when he's on.
