Rangers Blowing It Up
Unlike some, GM Anthony C is proving good on his word
One line team with 4th liners after that
No depth, no future, no hope
Not a serious contender
All comments made nary a week ago, about the Rangers franchise. Since then, GM Anthony C has been driving the bus on activity, and pulling off big name trade after big name trade, as he sets out to rebuild the Rangers into one with a bright future, admittedly sacrificing the present.
The first domino to fall was sending Keith Yandle to the Habs for Robert Hagg and a 5th next year. Hagg isn't a high end spec, but plays a solid game, Yandle's salary and ratings meant he didn't have much value, so this was the first domino to fall.
Next up the team moved goaltender Tuuka Rask and his massive contract, and although they eat 3m this year, and half next year, the team was able to stock up some picks. They sent 4th liner PE Bellemare out with Rask and in return received a 2nd and 5th this year, and a 3rd and 5th next year, in addition to 2 million.
With Rask out the door, it was just a matter of time until more deals started following, and last night the team moved their best asset in Logan Couture, along with Tyler Bozak to the Jets in exchange for Josh Morrissey, John Quennville, a first round pick (18) and a 5th round pick. Rumor is there was 4 team seriously after Couture, but the package of picks, and high end specs that the Jets offered up, was enough to entice Anthony C to pull the trigger on probably the biggest trade of his tenure.
Next out the door was Zach Parise with 2m retained for the next 2 years, a 5th next year and the number 18 pick. Coming back are prospects Justin Kirkland, Anthony Stolarz, Nicolas Aube-Kubel, the 13th pick, and a 2nd next year. Another solid deal by the team as they stock up the cupboards.
We've heard numerous rumblings that any of Shattenkirk, Staal, or Sekera could be next out the door. Others like Spaling, Miller, Callahan, and Weber are also in talks.
One thing is for certain, unlike other GM's, Anthony is making the moves to rebuild the organization, while the shortterm results won't be friendly, the team has their first next year, and are starting to build organizational depth, that will serve them well into the future.
Let's see what dominos fall next in NYR
