BRHL WJC Playoff PRIMER

A Preview of Each Matchup

BRHL WJC PRIMER

The round robin is over and there are 8 teams remaining in the playoffs games kick off right away and are single game elimination until final so I wanted to get this out as a bit of a primer. This breaks down the matchups, how each team did in the round robin and players to watch form each team in the games.

USA VS Quebec

USA 4-5-1

USA turned their tournament around after an 0-3-1 stumble out of the gate. This team leans heavy on their Captain Keller who led the team marginally by 5 points. Note these teams did split games in the round robin.

Players to Watch

Clayton Keller        10GP, 6G, 6A was 4th in tourny scoring

Kieffer Bellows      10GP, 3G, 4A

Logan Brown          10GP, 2G, 5A

Goalie: Cayden Primeau: 0.896 SV% and 3.01GAA

Quebec 8-2-0

Had a very strong round robin and was the best team in the Gretzky Conference. They were getting lots of help throughout the roster including having two of the top 5 defensemen in scoring and still Girard didn’t make the short list of players to watch from Quebec in this game.

Players to Watch

D. Pascal Corbeil        10GP, 3G, 6A Was 3rd in scoring for defensemen.

Pierre-Luc Dubois      10GP, 7G, 4A Was tourney leader in goals

Antoine Morand        10GP, 3G, 7A

Goalie: Tristan Berube 0.937 SV% and 1.97 GAA Was the 2nd best goalie in both SV% and GAA

Czechslovakia vs British Columbia

Czechslovakia 5-3-2

The Czechs had a good round robin. They are led by Ruzicka and Chytil up front with their point per game production but really lean on their goalie Hrenka.

Players to Watch

Adam Ruzicka            10GP, 5G, 5A

Filip Chytil                   10GP, 3G, 7A

Filip Zadina                 10GP, 2G, 6A

Goalie: David Hrenka 0.925 SV% and 2.53GAA Was also 4th best goalie in tourney in both SV% and GAA

British Columbia 5-3-2

Despite having the same record BC actually wont both games in the round robin 4-2 and 3-1. However BC has been on a horrible skid coming into this playoff matchup losing their last 4 games and the last 3 were in regulation.

Players to Watch

Dillon Dube                   10GP, 5G, 8A Was 3rd in league scoring

Michael Rasmussen    10GP, 4G, 7A

Justin Almedia              10GP, 4G, 5A

Goalie: Griffin Outhouse 0.910 SV% and 2.76 GAA and probably the best name in the tourney.

Maritimes vs Sweden

Maritimes 4-6-0

Another team that really turned things around after stumbling out of the gate. This team started 0-4. This is a team built from the net out with a goalie who was 5th in SV% and their top two scorers were actually their defensive top pair.

Players to Watch

D. Noah Dobson           10GP, 0G, 8A

D. Morgan Nuas           10GP, 0G, 8A

Jesse Sutton                  10GP, 5G, 2A

Goalie: Colton Ellis 0.921 SV% and 3.00 GAA 5th best SV% in tourney

Sweden 10-0-0

By far the most dominant team in the tourney and the clear cut favorite. Undefeated and showcasing top players across the board, it’s not hard to see why they have been so good. They won both meetings 4-1 and 5-2.

Players to Watch

Jesper Bratt                  10GP, 6G, 8A Tied for first in tourney scoring

Jonatan Berggren        10GP, 4G, 10A Tied for first in tourney scoring

D. Axel Bergkvist          10GP, 4G, 7A Was top scoring defensemen in round robin

Goalie: Jesper Myrenberg 0.948 SV% and 1.30 GAA was the best goalie in SV% and GAA

Alberta vs Russia

Alberta 5-5-0

Alberta has had a good tournament. They have not got the stability they were hoping from their goaltending yet they have been able overcome that and still produce with their top line which features the players to watch in this game.

Players to Watch

Tyson Jost                    10GP, 5G, 7A was tied for 5th in tourney scoring

Tyler Steenbergen      10GP, 5G, 7A was tied for 5th in tourney scoring

Mathew Philips           10GP, 3G, 7A

Goalie: Carter Hart 0.872 SV% and 3.15 GAA

Russia 6-4-0

Has had trouble producing offense so far in the tournament and have had to rely on their goaltender and defense to squeeze out some low scoring wins. Alberta is actually the one team they have been able to score on winning both games 4-2 and 4-1.

Players to Watch

D. Mikhail Sergachev   10GP, 3G, 4A

Andrei Svechnikov       10GP, 3G, 4A
