Ducks Future Core
The core moving forward
In this article I will highlight the best pieces of the BRHL Ducks that will be part of a solid core moving forward. Basically an excuse for me to brag about the little bit of good I have in the organization.
On the back end:
Damon Severson - Severson's time with the Devils has been nothing short of a roller coaster so far. After a couple of really nice WHL seasons, he seemingly came from out of nowhere and cracked the Devils as a 20 year old, where he posted really solid numbers for a rookie D-man. He established himself as an every day defenseman the following year, and had his best career season last year at the age of 22. With that said, it hasn't been a completely smooth ride. Despite signing a contract extension last year worth $4 Million +, he has recently found himself a healthy scratch. And though the likes of Lovejoy, Santini, don't necessarily deserve to play over Severson, it isn't exactly a positive sign. With that said, Severson is a promising player and probably the Devils' best overall defenseman, which bodes well for his BRHL future with the Ducks.
Rasmus Andersson - Andersson is a very gifted puck-moving defenseman. He's a high end passer, skater, and a lesser known fact about him is that he has a cannon for a one-timer. With all of that said, despite the fact that he has played extremely well at the AHL level for a year and a half now, the unfortunate fact for Rasmus is that he is a member of the Calgary Flames organization. Don't get me wrong, the Flames have a lot of really good players. The problem is that their management decided to sign Michael Stone to a 3 year, 3.5 million dollar contract... and then give him Andersson's expected spot in the lineup. The Flames now regularly dress at least two of Michael Stone, Brett Kulak, and my favourite, Matt Bartkowski. Despite all of that, Andersson is going to be a very good NHL D-man in the near future, and will be a huge part of the BRHL Ducks moving forward.
Josh Manson - Where do I start here? Wow. Kirk first made a really good draft pick. He then tried to ruin it by almost giving me Josh Manson, I think the ask was a 6th or 7th rounder. I declined. What an idiot I am. Anyways, I ultimately managed to acquire him this past offseason from Dan's Bruins. While the cost wasn't cheap, Manson has exceeded even my own expectations once again. He's a massive part of the NHL Ducks, playing a lot of PK and even strength minutes. While he doesn't see PP time, that isn't a knock on him (the Ducks are loaded with offensive defensemen), and he still produces really solid offensive numbers. I don't think I need to go on much longer here, Manson is a beast and I'm thrilled to have him.
Shea Theodore - Bryce's favourite. Listen, I get it. He's unlikely to ever kill many penalties. He's a one-dimension D-man, but he's also a very good one, and is well suited for today's game. Theo is a fantastic skater, and a really good puck mover, and the defensive game will come along as he sees more ice over the coming years. He's Vegas' most promising young defenseman, and he's going to put up really good numbers there for a very long time. You can all expect to see him quarterbacking the BRHL Ducks #1 powerplay unit for years to come.
In the crease:
I'll be honest, this part is boring. Everyone knows I have John Gibson, and everyone knows how nice his BRHL (and NHL for that matter) contract is. The reason I know that is because despite the fact that everyone knows he's a BRHL Duck for as long as I can keep him, I still get inquiries on him every few weeks. His rates are top 5 in the league, and will probably continue to be up there for years to come. He's the MVP of my team, and arguably the BRHL this year. I don't expect that to change.
Up front:
Mitch Marner - Not quite having the sophmore season I had hoped, but still a very good player. Very young, controlled for a long time, he's one of the best assets I have. Marner has 45 points in 43 BRHL games. He's the BRHL Ducks #1 RW for years to come.
Kevin Labanc - He's been everything Ducks GM Devon had hoped for and more. Traded 10 million BRHL dollars for him. Labanc is currently rotating between the Sharks top 2 lines, and quarterbacking their 2nd PP unit. He's going to be a very good, cheap BRHL Duck for a long time. The Colts bias paid off here, though I never really doubted it would in Labanc's case.
Henrik Borgstrom - He's not a NHL player yet, but he certainly will be. Selected at 19 in the BRHL Entry Draft, he was the Ducks 13th ranked player. Borgstrom is having a big season at the University of Denver, posting 30 points in 21 games. He'll be a big (no, literally, he's 6'3) part of the BRHL Ducks future.
Sam Steel - Yeah, yeah. I took him too high. We'll see, I love the player. He's not another Dal Colle, who by the way, I haven't given up on yet. Steel's having another big season captaining Regina, who I expect we'll see in the Memorial Cup this year. He's an extremely skilled player, and I expect to see him with the NHL Ducks next year, and BRHL Ducks the following year.
Not on this list are the six 1st round picks the Ducks have over the next three years, highlighted by SJ 1st this year, and ANA 1st next year.
It's actually a semi-exciting time in Anaheim for once. Looking playoff bound this year, and the future is starting to look brighter and brighter.
BRING BACK DAN LIFSHATZ.
