Reach for the Top

The Race for the 2017 BRHL President’s Trophy

The race for the President’s Trophy is, and has been for a while, a three horse race between the Chicago Blackhawks, the Dallas Stars in the West and the New Jersey Devils in the East.

Since I have an obvious stake in this race, I was curious how the last remaining 20 games or so shaped up for all three teams in the race for top spot in the 2017 BRHL regular season.

Chicago Blackhawks:

The Hawks currently lead the BRHL with 105 points enjoy a slight lead over the rest of the field: 5 points over the Devils and 8 points over the Stars; all with 65 games played.

Of the 17 games Chicago has left, they only have 7 home games remaining. But, they only have 5 games remaining against teams currently in the playoffs... 6 if you want to count Billy’s Penguins:

New Jersey Devils:

Currently one of the hottest teams in the BRHL with 6 wins in a row and a 9-1-0-0 record in their last 10 games, the Devils sit in second spot in the President’s Trophy race and lead the Eastern Conference with 100 pts in 65 games played.

In their remaining 17 games, Tim’s Devils have 9 home games remaining of which they play teams currently in a playoff position 9 times. Again, if we choose to factor in the Pittsburgh Penguins into the equation, that number rises to 11 games:

Dallas Stars

Another hot team in the league, Junya’s Dallas Stars currently trail only the Hawks in the standings in the Western Conference with 97 points and are riding a 5 game win streak and an 8-2-0 record in their last 10 games.

In 17 games the Stars have remaining, they only have 6 games at home and play teams in a current playoff position in 14 of their remaining games left (no Billy rule here!):

The Verdict:

The President’s Trophy is definitely the Hawks to lose at this point. They have the least amount of competition when compared to the other two teams and has a head start to begin with as we start down the stretch run of the 2017 regular season in the BRHL.
