Goals, Goals, Goals...everyone wants the guys who will score 50 a year. Let's take a closer look at the numbers to see if that equals success. From the chart above, you can see there are 3 stats that I used for this.
Goals for/Against, Shots for/ Against, and PIM.
There seems to be a pretty good correlation between the shots and rank of the team, even more so than the goals. There are obviously outliers to anything, the PIM helps with this. There are 4 teams that are very low on the list of combined GFA and SFA, Flames, Hurricanse, Sharks, Oilers. These teams are in playoffs spots even though they are breaking even in GFA and SFA. The thing that makes up for this is the fact that they take very little penalties giving them a chance to score and squeak out the victories.
There is a big asteriks here...trades also changed all of this data at some point, but the overall picture is pretty indicative of where people are. If there were any recent trades that changes the team (ie Doan's penalty minutes being traded off of the Flames), the team could be trending up. I believe this will show who will make it far and who will fizzle out early. Time will tell!
