Lightning look to other players to shore up farm system
Chara OUT, Hartnell, Hainsey, Beleskey and Ribiero next
Earlier in the week, Tampa Bay GM Eric Ferraro made his first deal. It was deemed to be a success as the Lightning were able to acquire a top young defensemen in Kyle Wood. In addition to Wood, a 5th round pick was included as well as young smallish forward Tyler Motte. "We were happy with the deal, we centered it around Wood and went from there. Motte was a nice addition, but any time spent in the BRHL would be an additional reward. We hope to make use of the 5th round pick the best we can.".
With Chara out of the way, the Lightning have looked towards some other players to help shore up the farm system. Scott Hartnell, Ron Hainsey, Matt Beleskey and Mike Ribiero are on the "to-do" list. The Lightning were said they are willing to retain salary on their UFA's, but would hard pressed to retain on anything outside of this season. "We don't want to put ourselves at a disadvantage by retaining salary past this season. If we were in full rebuild mode, I'd consider it, but I see some pieces on this team that can help moving forward. If we can have a successful free agency, I believe we are back in the playoff picture next season".
Talks on Hartnell and Hainsey have already started, introductory offers have been a 3rd for Hartnell, and a 4th for Hainsey. The Lightning haven't pulled the trigger on any of these deals as they feel like there is something better out there, and are waiting for the right moment to pull the trigger. It will be an interesting week up ahead, as teams put the final touches on their rosters for the playoffs.
