Islanders Swept by Devils
Tied For 2nd Washington as Cap's top Rangers
There is an old adage which states "be careful what you wish for". As for the Islanders, who had just won 9 of their last 11, they looked forward to this weekends home and home series with the 1st place Devils. The Islanders knew Saturday night would be tough with forwards Rick Nash and Artem Anisimov unavailable. What GM Lawrence Linke didn't expect was for the Islanders not to show up. They were oushot 18 to 3 in the first period and found themselves down 2 to 0. Lundqvist was spectacular Linke stated. Clark MacArthhur and Wayne Simmons were the Devil goal scorers
The Islanders played with a sense of urgency in the 2nd period and Sean Courturier cut the gap to 2 to 1 which is the way the 2nd period ended. Wayne Simmons scored early in the 3rd but Kevin Hayes cut the deficit to 1 at 11:19 of the 3rd. Despite pulling Lundqvist the Islanders were unable to score the equalizer. The Islanders outshot the Devils over the last two periods with the final tally 36 to 25 in the Devils favor.
Sunday both teams proceeded to the Barclay Center with Anisimov and Nash back in the line up. The Islanders kept Lundqvist in goal. Fran Nielsen openeed the scoring for the Devils but Cam Atkinson tied it at 1 after 1. The Islanders scored the first goal of the second period as Brandon Saad buried a wrist shot giving the Islanders their first lead of the series. Halfway through the period Zdeno Chara scored a power play goal and a minute later Paul Stastny gave the Devils a 3 to 2 lead.
At 9:05 of the 3rd period J T Miller tied it up at 3. It appeared we were heading for overtime as the Devils put their 4th line on the ice. Tom Kuhnhackl scored t 19:36 bearking the hearts of the Islander faithful.
Both loses, coupled with the Caps 3 to 2 win over the hapless Rangers dropped the Isles to a tie for 2nd place in the division.
