Devils active this week
Land Chara and Zuccarello in separate deals
The New Jersey Devils were an active team this week on the trade market. Rumor has it they were one of the finalist to land Jamie Benn from St. Louis, but he eventually went to division-rival Pittsburgh.
The team was aware that the blueline need to be shored up heading into the playoffs. The team for a while now had their sights set on Tampa Bay's Zdeno Chara. The team reached out to the former GM before he left but he still wanted to make a playoff run. But then when it was announced that the GM had left the organization, the Devils hit up the new GM to see if they were willng to move big Z.
Once Eric, the new GM there, got settled into the league, the teams began conversations on the UFA-to-be. The Devils immediated offer high-end prospect Kyle Wood and two other assets (Tyler Motte and a 5th). Tampa took time to receive other offers but it was apparent this was going to be the best offer. And Chara is now a Devil.
Chara will be the iineup tonight when the Devils begin a critical home-and-home with the New York Islanders, who are currently 6 points behind the Devils in the Metro division, and the Isle has a game in hand.
Thinking they were pretty much set for the playoffs and missing out on Benn, the Devils surprisely made another deal. The team acquired Mats Zuccarello, Taylor Leier, and a very high 7th (Ana) round draft pick from the Ottawa Senators for Boone Jenner and cash (Damn, Kirk is poor. Think he needs to do some data entry or something)
GM Tim Scholl felt that Zuccarello is a cheaper option with basicly the same rates this year. Also, Zuccarello is looking to rerate better next year as well then Jenner. The trade off is that Zucc will be a FA in 3 years when his contract is done, but Jenner just recently had signed an RFA extension and will still be under team control at the end.
The Devils are hoping that Zuccarello arrives in time for tonight's big game (hint hint commish)
With that, it would seem that the Devils are done. But, hey, we never know.
