Buffalo Sabres Draft Review

3 drafted players joining the Sabres prospect pool

For the second straight season the Buffalo Sabres entered the BRHL draft without a selection in the first 4 rounds. That’s the cost of upgrading the roster to make runs in the playoffs. There is no pressure drafting this late, no sweating over taking a kid with a serious back issue. Players drafted this late are rarities to even see NHL ice. With that said, let’s take a look at the long shot prospects the Sabres are adding to their pool:

Pick# 157:

Colton Roberts RHD 6’4” 201 lbs – Vancouver Giants (WHL)

Roberts was viewed as a raw prospect in his draft year, a toolsy player who needed to work on his decision making. He’s an above average skater who has a good shot from the point and has some snarl in his game with his physical play. He’s been constantly improving every season in the WHL and has committed to Colorado College next season to round out his game. He didn’t have much left to prove in the WHL.

I had Quinn Hutson at the top of my list here and was disappointed he went earlier, but Roberts was second on my list and I’m happy with this selection.

Pick# 189:

Jared Woolley LHD 6’5” 207 lbs – London Knights (OHL)

As a London Knights fan I was thrilled to see Woolley drop to my 6th round pick. Woolley has the size you look for in a defender and plays a very physical game to match. He isn’t just some big goon though, he joins the rush, makes good reads when pinching at the blue line and makes smart breakout passes. His play this season earned him an ELC from the Kings, he’ll be back with the Knights next season with the hopes of continuing development of his offensive game.

I had Woolley and Nate Misskey on my radar for this pick. Misskey went way earlier than I thought but equally pleased that Woolley was still there.

Pick# 221:

Riley Mercer G 6’2” 203 lbs – Drummondville Voltigeurs (QMJHL)

Mercer was passed over in the draft during his eligible years mostly due to inconsistent play in the Q. He’d play lights out against top teams but then put up a stinker against weaker competition. He’s been continuously improving year to year though and is a decent long shot to have in the system.

This pick was partially made due to his brother Dawson being on the Sabres.

Literally took Woolley as I was about to!!
