USA wins WJC Gold!

USA wins WJC Gold in a close series with Finland!

Round 1:

Ontario vs USA:

This was the game to watch this round.  Either team has the potential to win gold.  USA jumped out to an early 2-0 lead and never looked back.  USA got stellar goaltending from Jake Oettinger and got goals from Max Jones, Jeremey Bracco and Kailer Yamamoto.  MVP honors goes to Zach Werenski.  Collecting 1 assist and playing almost 23 minutes, while shutting down team Ontario’s top lines.

USA wins 3-1

Prairies vs Czech:

A game that should have been one sided.  Was actually very close and was an exciting game.  Both goalies played well.  Each team capitalizing on the PP.  Prairies pull off the upset win over the Czech with a 3-2 win.  Brett Howden getting MVP honors of this game with a goal and an assist, as well as playing just over 19 mins.

Russia vs Finland:

Another big matchup in the first round.  Again both of these teams could of won gold.  First period was filled with Penalty after penalty.  Although what ended up sparking the high offensive Finland team was Alexander Alexeyev from team Russia getting ejected after a spear.  Finland came out and scored on the PP, then sealed the game later on in that period from a goal by Sebastian Aho.  MVP Honors has to go Ilya Samsonov of Russia.  Stopping 38 of 40 shots.  If it wasn’t for him this game wasn’t even close.

Sweden vs Alberta:

A game that featured two high end prospect goaltenders in Carter Hart and Filip Gustavsson.  Sweden got to Carter Hart early and never looked back.  Getting goals from Joel Eriksson-Ek, and John Dahlstrom.  Filip Gustavsson proved to be the difference maker in this one, stopping all 33 shots.  MVP honors goes to the goaltender Filip Gustavsson.

Round 2;

Prairies vs USA:

This was nail biter!  Prairies really took it to the USA team early and never took their foot off the pedal.  Prairies ended up outshooting the USA team 33-26.  Both teams getting on the board in the second period.  The eventual winner came when Praires Center Lane Pederson took a questionable roughing call. Team USA would capitalize on the PP sending the USA to the gold medal game. MVP Honors goes to OT winner Auston Matthews.

Sweden vs Finland:

Where did Sweden’s goaltending go?  Finland scoring 6 goals on 29 shots.  This one was never close!  Finland cruised to the gold medal game.  MVP honors goes to Ville Sarijarvi for setting up 5 goals and logging almost 22 mins.

Gold Medal Series:

USA vs Finland

Game 1:

Both teams being so evenly matched, back and forth, back and forth.  What faltered for the USA was their goaltending.  Oettinger only stopping 23 of 26 shots.  Finland also got timely scoring from Aho and Palmu to seal the game.  MVP honors goes to Patrick Laine for setting up the game tieing goal as well as throwing his weight around with 3 big hits.

Game 2:

What happened to defense?  This game both tenders seen a lot of rubber.  Oettinger facing 42 shots and Ruusu facing 37.  This game was Finland’s game until Kailer Yamamoto decided to take this game into his own hands.  First he scored the PP goal late in the 3rd to give the USA team life to bring the score to 3-2. Then with 9 seconds left in the 3rd period and the goalie pulled Kailer scored to send this game to OT. 4:49 into OT Brock Boeser scored to send this game to 3rd and final game.  Game MVP honors goes to Kailer Yamamoto who had 2 goals on 4 shots.

Game 3:

Finland came out to 2-0 lead in the 2nd period to see USA storm right back with two of their own.  In the third period USA took their first lead 4:27 seconds in.  That didn’t last long with Finland answering back 8 seconds later.  USA didn’t sit back and came and scored 6 seconds later.  Yeah that’s right 3 goals in 14 seconds.  With USA having the lead and pushing for another, they finally got the insurance goal and eventual gold medal winning goal from Ryan Moore.  Game MVP honors goes Max Jones setting up 3 goals, having 5 shots and 4 hits.

Congratulations goes out to Team USA(yeah this me) for winning gold and Team Finland(Jordan).
